The Salvation Army is a registered 501 (c)3 nonprofit
organization. As such, we are solely dependent on
donations and money generated through fundraisers to help the
needy in communities all across the state, and throughout the
United
States
and the
rest of the world.
Monetary
Donations
Concerned individuals who want to make a
difference in the lives of the less fortunate entrust The
Salvation Army with financial contributions, thereby allowing
our organization to be their hands in the community. As
a result of generous charitable contributions, the Army is
able to provide food for the hungry, offer shelter to single
women and families without a home, supply quality early
childhood education for low-income families, give a boy and
girl a positive after-school environment, and much more.
Material Donations
When many people think about giving to The
Salvation Army, they think of donating clothes and furniture
they no longer use or need. We truly appreciate these
donations. However, gifts of this type fully fund only
one of our programs - resident substance abuse treatment at
Adult Rehabilitation Centers. The vast majority of
Salvation Army programs and services must be funded by
monetary donations.
Red
Kettle Donations
The most visible way to make a donation is
through The Salvation Army Red Kettle effort. Each year
during the
Holiday
season, bell ringers at kettle stands seem to
come out of the woodwork. And after Christmas Eve, they
disappear just as quickly. The kettle drive lasts only a
few weeks, and gives concerned individuals the opportunity to
drop coins or a few bills into the container. Money
raised through the kettle program is dedicated to funding the
year-round operation of the Central Kentucky Area Services.
Still, this funding only meets part of the total needs.
Additional
Funding
Additional monetary donations are needed to help
fund many other services, including: disaster relief,
food pantries, homeless shelters, clothing banks, Christmas
assistance, after-school programs, child care, youth sports
leagues, senior citizen programs, and summer camp programs.
Gifts
of Stock
Donations
of stock can be a benefit to you as well as to The Salvation
Army. An outright gift of long-term securities (owned more
than one year) to The Salvation Army is free of capital gains
tax, no matter how much their value may have risen. Therefore,
it is better to donate appreciated long-term stock outright
than to sell it yourself and then donate the money to charity,
in which case you would be responsible for the capital gains
tax. A gift of stock also allows you to remove the appreciated
asset from your taxable estate.
When
you make a gift of long-term appreciated stock, you can deduct
the full fair market value of the gift from your taxable
income when itemizing deductions in the year you make the gift
as long as it does not exceed 30 percent of your adjusted gross income. In addition, you may “carryover” and deduct any
remaining amount during the next five years, as long as it
does not exceed 30 percent of your adjusted gross income in
the year of deduction.
You can take pleasure in knowing that your
generous gift provides immediate support for the programs and
work of The Salvation Army.

You are
planning for your future. Now consider helping us plan for
ours. Your future comes first. Do you have a will? A will is a
legal document that distributes your property and the assets
of your estate to individuals and charities you wish. The
Salvation Army would like to ask you to consider including us
in your will to receive a future gift from your estate.
Your
will is an expression of the values, material and spiritual,
you have acquired in your lifetime and wish to pass on to your
heirs and to charities. It is rewarding to know that your will
supports an organization that reflects the rules of your life
- loving, caring, helping and sharing.
The Salvation Army would like to give you more
information in this area. We will be happy to send materials
to you, or a personal visit can be arranged with no obligation
on your part.
